Wolfprints: For Galia

For Galia Yevtushenko

                           (Galina Semenova)

trees leaves lakes Leningrad
one summer night

                           remembering
wolf prints measuring snow
(he walked alongside them all the way)

these aging pages with curling edges
a landscape turning back the ears of
this fur cap

                          this summer evening
turning back to that
barking wolf

he saw again
fur skins discarding snow
                          that fed the streams
                          that filled the lake
                          that reflects the moon

Leningrad leaves & breeze

one summer night
