At The Kakadu, Lagos, 1967

We were dancing

“I don’t know why
I don’t know why
I don’t know why
I try”

Fela Ransome Kuti’s Afro beat highlife band
Fela played the trumpet

time touches, erodes
beauty inspires me
twilight gleams
while light fades in the West

I don’t know why
what once was unwritten
takes me onward
one page a day

love’s debt still unpaid
overdue
an accumulating sum
silver sixpences
I'll throw at the moon

there once was a dawn
when we kissed

farewell
