Donal’s Note to Santa
A Work in Progress
97
Old age experiences time present
How change happens slowly then suddenly
It’s time to update last wills and testament
Time past is fast forgotten
I’d like a broom to sweep oak baseboard trim
Where it meets the edge of bamboo flooring
Instead of using my fingers to dredge
Cobwebs dog hair intermingled
The mind must maintain its own dusty stacks
Not shelving time present saving room for time past
In whose archive runs experience’s seam
Where memories gleam
I’d like a box of matches and many candles
To make a bright stage out of darkness
Where I can play back favorite times and places
Remembering happiness
The supply of firewood has run out there is no coal
I’d like a kerosene heater to heat thick stone walls
I’d like my youth again to enjoy time future
Not avoiding its calls
